Finishes

Splinter wooden products will have one of a number of finishes applied to them dependent on wood type, use and desired look’n’feel.

Our most used finish is tung oil. This 100% natural oil penetrates the wood and cures as it dries, giving a durable finish that provides good protection.

Another option is our own blend of 100% natural ingredients of NZ bees wax and oil that provides a long lasting and durable water repellent finish.

We also use one of the finest French Polishes, Marylands, appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This Polish is use on some darker timbers and most importantly the external areas of products not becoming in contact with food.

Some other finishes we use are Danish oil, boiled linseed oil. Dependent on wood types these finishes gives a depth of earthy tones and a durable protection.

Care

Wood by its very nature will move and lose moisture to some degree over time. But it can be slowed and with care, your wooden product will keeps its showroom lustre for years to come.
Your beautiful pieces can become dull due to humidity, temperature and handling. To keep your piece nourished and looking its best, Splinter recommends that you refresh your oil finished items regularly.
We use Tung oil, other good options may include boiled linseed, walnut and danish oils. Some oils may contain nuts. Read the manufactures labels first before applying any such finishes. The use of vegetable or olive oils may make wooden products rancid, imparting an unpleasant smell and taste on food served with your piece. So best avoid this option.

Simply apply your chosen oil and allow it to absorb for at least 15 minutes (or follow the your products instructions). Buff off any excess oil with a soft cloth or paper towel to achieve a lovely satin finish.

Never put your wooden items in a dishwasher and avoid submerging in water. To clean, a wipe down with a damp soapy cloth is just fine.
Direct sunlight can cause wood to fade, or in some cases darken over time. It can also warp and check (crack) bowls, vessels and even slabs. We recommend displaying your precious Splinter pieces out of direct sunlight.
